Happy 420! Let’s take the time to remember the black Americans jailed for marijuana use/distribution far more than white Americans despite the usage rates the same. Look at how steady those arrest rates are for white people while the black arrest rate climbed steadily.

Holy shit.

This shouldn’t be surprising.
Racism is literally built into drug policing. much all urban police
departments do most of their narcotics policing by stopping and searching
vehicles and people in neighborhoods designated as “high-crime areas”. These
areas are almost always disproportionately low-income and disproportionately
African American and Latino. Just as an example, in New York City, narcotics police commonly use stop and frisks to
search people who appear “suspicious” and that police think might have drugs and/or
drug paraphernalia. In the report of all of these
stop and frisks during one year in NYC
, young black men and young Latino men
between ages 14 & 24 accounted for about 42% of all stops, and that number
was much higher in areas with the lowest black and Latino populations. So in
neighborhoods that were whiter, the percentage of stops that were in this
demographic greater than in other neighborhood. Considering this demographic only
makes up 4.7% of NYC’s population, those numbers are grotesquely high…especially
when you take into account that 90% of the men stopped were innocent. Police
departments are always trying to justify this sort of thing by saying that
these are the people committing the crimes but obviously that’s absolute
nonsense. The entire war on drugs is a sham that was quite literally invented
as of a political agenda to suppress the voices of black people and “hippies”.
This is a quote from John Ehrlichman, a member of the Nixon white house who
helped establish the Controlled Substance Act which began the war on drugs
“The
Nixon Campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies:
the antiwar Left, and Black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we
couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or Black. But by getting
the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and
then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could
arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings and vilify them
night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the
drugs? Of course we did.”
There it is, straight from the horse’s mouth. So don’t
let anyone fool you into thinking the police aren’t racist. Our country has
bred a system of racism without racists and as long as the war on drugs
remains a powerful political tool, this system will always have life being breathed
into it.
